SUMMARY:June Arkansas Water Webinar
DESCRIPTION:What happens when a drinking water reservoir serving more than 80\,000 people starts experiencing occasional harmful algal blooms and water quality problems? Find out at the next Arkansas Water Webinar\, hosted by the Arkansas Water Resources Center on Thursday\, June 18\, from noon to 1 p.m. \nBrewer Lake is a mesotrophic drinking water reservoir serving >80\,000 people in Central Arkansas. In recent years\, this reservoir has exhibited occasional harmful algal blooms and seasonal nuisance taste-odor issues. Toward an ecological diagnosis of the cause\, we have monitored water quality year-round at Brewer Lake since 2019\, focusing on lake physico-chemistry\, nutrient dynamics\, and taste-odor compounds. Complementary research by our group has characterized watershed loading and lake-bottom sediment storage and release of nutrients into lake surface waters. In this presentation\, I will describe how the seasonal and annual pulse of Brewer Lake reflects lake mixing and stratification\, coupled to changes in lake nutrient dynamics. I will link our research insights to outcomes including improved drinking water treatment and development of a watershed management plan for Brewer Lake. Our work demonstrates how scientists’ collaboration with a water utility can advance source water protection in the long-term. \nSpeaker: Hal Halvorson\, PhD\, Associate Professor\, Department of Biology\, University of Central Arkansas\, hhalvorson@uca.edu \nDr. Halvorson is an Associate Professor in the Biology Department at the University of Central Arkansas. He and his lab group study the ecological of freshwater ecosystems\, with particular focus on the inter-relations among water quality\, microbes\, and invertebrates. He earned his B.A. in Biology and Chemistry from St. Olaf College in Minnesota and Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Arkansas. He has studied Brewer Lake for >6 years with particular focus on water quality and nutrient cycling. He lives in Little Rock with his husband\, Nathan. \nRegister here!\n

SUMMARY:May Arkansas Water Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Register Now for the May Arkansas Water Webinar!  Register Here \nWHEN: Thursday\, May 21\, Noon- 1 p.m. \nTITLE: Land Use Impacts on Water Quality in Central Arkansas: A Three-Year Comparative Study of Urban\, Agricultural\, and Protected Drinking Water Watersheds \nAgricultural and urban expansion increasingly impacts water quality in the southeastern United States\, yet comprehensive studies comparing agricultural watersheds to other land uses are relatively rare. Understanding these different impacts is critical for targeted watershed management and protection of drinking water resources\, particularly for the growing population of nearly 500\,000 people in Central Arkansas. This study presents results from a three-year monitoring program comparing water quality across urban\, agricultural\, and protected drinking water watersheds in central Arkansas to quantify land use effects and identify priority management areas. \nSPEAKER: Heather Black\, PhD\, Assistant Professor\, Department of Geology\, University of Arkansas\, Little Rock\, hblack@ualr.edu \nREGISTRATION:\nWebinar Registration – Zoom \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. SUMMARY:Speaker Series: Unpaved Roads- Efforts in Arkansas
DESCRIPTION:Join the Alliance for our Quarterly Speaker Series! Kevin McGaughey with Arkansas Natural Resources Division (ANRD)\, and Clay Word with The Nature Conservancy (TNC) will be presenting on “Unpaved Roads – Efforts in Arkansas” \n85% of Arkansas roads are unpaved and can contribute significant amounts of sediment- the #1 pollutant in the Beaver Lake Watershed\, into our waterways. Learn from an Arkansas Natural Resources Division specialist about how the Arkansas Unpaved Roads Grant Program (AURP) functions\, helps counties in practical ways economically and can help improve water quality. \nA specialist from TNC will also present on the importance of stream barrier remediation in the Interior Highlands. TNC will discuss the benefits to water quality\, conservation\, and infrastructure that barrier remediation can provide using three different projects of varying size and scope as examples. Project management considerations and lessons learned from each project will also be presented. \nRegistration is required. This speaker series will be free and held on Zoom. A live Q & A will follow the presentation. The presentation will be recorded and uploaded on Alliance YouTube. \nClick here to register. For any questions\, please email info@beaverwatershedalliance.org \nClick here to download the flyer. \nThis Speaker Series is sponsored by Beaver Water District. \n
