SUMMARY:Mapping Flood Risk Across the Beaver Lake Watershed: Free Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Join us and our partners on April 30th from 9 – 10 AM for a kickoff webinar introducing a new flood modeling project for the Beaver Lake watershed. This effort will develop a two-dimensional model to better understand how stormwater moves across the landscape and identify areas most vulnerable to flooding. During this session\, we’ll share the project’s goals\, approach\, and how it builds on existing data and local knowledge. We’ll also discuss how the model will support watershed planning and lead to the development of a user-friendly mapping tool. \nThis free webinar is an opportunity to learn about the project\, ask questions\, and hear how this work can help inform future planning and flood resilience efforts across the watershed. SUMMARY:Machine Learning as a Tool to Predict Lithium in Brines Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Aug 21\, 2025\, at noon for the next Arkansas Water Webinar! To register\, click here.\n\n\n\nTopic: Machine Learning as a Tool to Predict Lithium in Brines: An Example from the Smackover Formation of Southern Arkansas\n\n\n\nSpeaker: Katherine Knierim\, Hydrologist\, US Geological Survey\, Lower Mississippi – Gulf Water Science Center\, Little Rock\, Arkansas\n\n\n\n\nThe chemical composition of high salinity groundwater\, or brine\, is important to understand for quantifying the availability of both water and critical mineral resources. For example\, brines may have high concentrations of dissolved critical minerals\, such as lithium (Li)\, and provide an important economic resource as the world transitions to a greater reliance on Li-ion batteries. The Smackover Formation is part of a regionally important petroleum and brine system in the Gulf Coast region of the southern United States (U.S.) and includes high Li concentrations (> 400 mg/L) in the brines. In this study\, the U.S. Geological Survey and the Arkansas Department of Energy and Environment—Office of the State Geologist used published and newly (2022) collected brine Li concentration data to train a random-forest (RF) machine-learning model using geologic\, geochemical\, and temperature explanatory variables. Predicted brine Li concentrations from the RF model at approximately 1\,000 to 3\,000 meters depth across the Smackover Formation ranged from 3 to 420 mg/L. Uncertainty in the mapped RF model predictions—based on the 90th percentile prediction interval across the Li map—were used with formation thickness and porosity information to calculate the range of the Li mass in Smackover Formation brines. This study provides an example of using machine learning to predict deep brine chemistry for a critical mineral resource evaluation. SUMMARY:June Arkansas Water Webinar: Beaver Lake Secchi Day
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the June Arkansas Water Webinar on June 19th! Beaver Water District’s Matthew Rich will be speaking about Beaver Lake Secchi Day– History\, Trends\, and Citizen Science. \nUnderstanding the source of one’s drinking water is imperative in preserving that source for future generations. Ensuring that drinking water sources remains viable is a goal that researchers\, water treatment managers\, and water quality conservationists can work toward for the entirety of a career. However\, without public buy-in\, the monumental task of source water protection would not be possible. To educate the citizens of northwest Arkansas about the source of their safe\, clean drinking water\, Beaver Water District initiated Secchi Day on Beaver Lake\, a citizen science engagement program. Beaver Lake is the source of drinking water for 1 in 5 Arkansans\, that is over 600\,000 people in northwest Arkansas. With this citizen science program\, we aim to bridge the gap between source and tap\, and 2025 marks the 20th Anniversary of Secchi Day. In this webinar\, Matthew Rich will discuss the history and formation of Secchi Day\, data trends from this citizen-scientist-collected data\, and what it takes to run a successful program like this. Matthew Rich\, an Environmental Specialist with Beaver Water District\, received his BS and MS degrees from the University of Arkansas. Between his degrees\, he spent time as a Research Associate and Lab Manager at the Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium (LUMCON) researching the effects of oil spills on Louisiana marshes\, as well as annual hypoxia in the northern Gulf of Mexico known as “The Dead Zone”. For the past 9 years\, he’s worked on source water protection issues\, along with citizen science engagement efforts like Secchi Day on Beaver Lake. \nREGISTRATION: https://uada.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_MBWWz0TZQemqvZgcQmXi_w#/registration \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. SUMMARY:April Arkansas Water Webinar: Removing Trash from our Waterways
DESCRIPTION:Removing Trash from our Waterways Webinar \nThursday\, April 17\, 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM (Virtual) \nIt is estimated that 1 to 2 million tons of plastic enter the oceans annually from rivers. Rivers are major conduits of trash\, including plastic waste\, into oceans. This waste poses a significant threat to drinking water quality\, as it can introduce pollutants\, bacteria\, and viruses that contaminate water sources\, leading to potential health risks. Trash capture technologies have been developed to remove trash from waterways. In this panel discussion\, we will hear from several organizations implementing this technology in Arkansas and the messages they are spreading to preserve water quality that is suitable for drinking\, agricultural use\, and recreation for future generations. \nSPEAKERS: \nReed Green\, AR Master Naturalists\nBrian Nalley\, Saline River Watershed Alliance\nMichael Sacomani\, Saline River Watershed Alliance\nCowper Chadbourn\, Arkansas Canoe Club\nDebbie Doss\, Arkansas Canoe Club \nREGISTRATION: https://uada.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_Nf5R2TiZQTqSTFFbFu8OHQ \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. SUMMARY:AR Water Webinar
DESCRIPTION:TOPIC: AGFC Considering Fish and People at River Access Developments: Improved Conservation-based Recreation and Habitat with Infrastructure Development Projects \nAGFC has a history of minimalist provision at river access areas based on historic funding provided primarily by anglers. This resulted in a mindset of primarily just providing for parking and boat access. Funding and recreational use at river access sites have diversified\, as well as types of angling. Also\, stream habitat engineering\, streambank access stability design and engineering have advanced. AGFC is trying to incorporate improved water quality\, stream fisheries habitat\, streambank stabilization\, improved riverside access\, and bank fishing at river access sites. As important\, access area design now strives toward decreased long-term maintenance expenses by incorporating more built-in sustainability such as no-mow areas providing pollinator habitat and solar-powered safety lighting. \nSPEAKER: Darrell Bowman\, Recreation and Access Coordinator\, Arkansas Game and Fish Commission \nWHEN: Nov 5\, 2024 12:00 PM CST \nREGISTER: Click here to register \n
