The free event will be held at the Elkins Community Center (162 Doolin Drive\, Elkins\, AR) and snacks and refreshments will be provided. \nLocal historian\, Susan Young\, will share a story on “Kith\, Kin\, and Claims on Chicken Bristle Mountain.” Susan is a lifelong resident of Fayetteville and a fifth-generation Ozarker. She worked as the outreach coordinator for the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History in Springdale for 27 years. Susan’s presentation will follow the life story of a woman who came to the present-day Elkins area before the Civil War\, outlived two husbands\, and raised her many children in the area. The White River of the Elkins area drew many settlers (from the first humans to today) to the area\, including the woman in the topic of the presentation. Everyone has a story to tell- come learn about how local rivers in the area impacted the lives of early settlers! \nAlan Bland\, retired Beaver Lake Army Corps of Engineers Ranger\, worked on the lake for decades. Click HERE to register. \nWar Eagle Creek is the largest tributary to Beaver Lake\, drinking water source for 550\,000 residents in Northwest Arkansas. \nA collaborative partnership between Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC)\, Beaver Watershed Alliance\, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service\, landowners\, nonprofits\, state and local governments\, and others are working together to improve War Eagle Creek and its tributaries. \nThrough mutual goals and collaboration\, over $3.6 million in funding has been obtained to move forward with the project. Partners are actively working to remove stream barriers to open 434 miles of waterway\, address eroding streambanks\, restore riparian and wetlands\, propagate mussels for reestablishment and conduct biological monitoring. In less than a year\, a large dam and overflow barrier were removed on War Eagle Creek (Fall 2023). \nThese efforts aim to improve water quality and protect our drinking water supply\, but will also restore habitat for target species\, as twenty-seven Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN) occur in War Eagle Creek\, including two federally protected species. These projects will also help to aid local counties in flood management\, restore floodplains\, help local farmers\, and provide education throughout the watershed area. \nAGFC Stream Habitat Coordinator Sean Saunders will join us to speak about the restoration details of the project\, as well as the benefits of barrier removals and stream restoration. This resulted in a mindset of primarily just providing for parking and boat access. Funding and recreational use at river access sites have diversified\, as well as types of angling. Also\, stream habitat engineering\, streambank access stability design and engineering have advanced. AGFC is trying to incorporate improved water quality\, stream fisheries habitat\, streambank stabilization\, improved riverside access\, and bank fishing at river access sites. To educate the citizens of northwest Arkansas about the source of their safe\, clean drinking water\, Beaver Water District initiated Secchi Day on Beaver Lake\, a citizen science engagement program. Beaver Lake is the source of drinking water for 1 in 5 Arkansans\, that is over 600\,000 people in northwest Arkansas. With this citizen science program\, we aim to bridge the gap between source and tap\, and 2025 marks the 20th Anniversary of Secchi Day. In this webinar\, Matthew Rich will discuss the history and formation of Secchi Day\, data trends from this citizen-scientist-collected data\, and what it takes to run a successful program like this. Matthew Rich\, an Environmental Specialist with Beaver Water District\, received his BS and MS degrees from the University of Arkansas. To register\, click here.\n\n\n\nTopic: Machine Learning as a Tool to Predict Lithium in Brines: An Example from the Smackover Formation of Southern Arkansas\n\n\n\nSpeaker: Katherine Knierim\, Hydrologist\, US Geological Survey\, Lower Mississippi – Gulf Water Science Center\, Little Rock\, Arkansas\n\n\n\n\nThe chemical composition of high salinity groundwater\, or brine\, is important to understand for quantifying the availability of both water and critical mineral resources. For example\, brines may have high concentrations of dissolved critical minerals\, such as lithium (Li)\, and provide an important economic resource as the world transitions to a greater reliance on Li-ion batteries. The Smackover Formation is part of a regionally important petroleum and brine system in the Gulf Coast region of the southern United States (U.S.) and includes high Li concentrations (> 400 mg/L) in the brines. In this study\, the U.S. Geological Survey and the Arkansas Department of Energy and Environment—Office of the State Geologist used published and newly (2022) collected brine Li concentration data to train a random-forest (RF) machine-learning model using geologic\, geochemical\, and temperature explanatory variables. Predicted brine Li concentrations from the RF model at approximately 1\,000 to 3\,000 meters depth across the Smackover Formation ranged from 3 to 420 mg/L. Uncertainty in the mapped RF model predictions—based on the 90th percentile prediction interval across the Li map—were used with formation thickness and porosity information to calculate the range of the Li mass in Smackover Formation brines. This study provides an example of using machine learning to predict deep brine chemistry for a critical mineral resource evaluation.
