SUMMARY:Land Management Field Day
DESCRIPTION:Pasture and forest landowners in the War Eagle Creek watershed are invited to a field day to learn about management practices that can improve forested and grazed lands. Practices to be covered will include ponds\, unpaved roads\, how to manage erosion\, and pasture improvement techniques. Participants will learn about practical conservation practices and how to apply for financial assistance to cover 75%\, or up to 90%\, of the cost. Technical assistance will be provided to help fill out applications for funding and set up free site visits. \nThe workshop will be held at the Spurlock Farm near Huntsville on November 15\, 2023\, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; lunch will be provided at no cost. \nBeaver Watershed Alliance is working with event partners\, including USDA-Natural Resource Conservation Services\, USDA-Farm Service Agency\, and additional sponsorship provided by Beaver Water District and Cargill Cares. \nThe Land Management Field Day is a program in conjunction with the War Eagle Creek Watershed Initiative (WECWI) Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP)\, funded by the US Department of Agriculture-Natural Resources Conservation Services. Over $2 million in funding is dedicated to landowners in the War Eagle watershed to improve land and water resources. War Eagle Creek contributes 1/3 of the water supplies to Beaver Lake\, our region’s drinking water source. The RCPP program started in 2023 and will go through 2027; however\, funding is limited\, and landowners are encouraged to start the application process now. \nPlease RSVP by emailing info@beaverwatershedalliance.org or calling 479-750-8007. \n

SUMMARY:Forestry Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Forestry Workshop: Maximizing Forest Health & Profitability \nJoin the Alliance for this FREE workshop! This will be an excellent opportunity for forest landowners to learn about enhancing management goals for longevity\, land and watershed stewardship\, and wildlife habitat. \nUnmanaged forest properties can have negative impacts. Human influences have led to overcrowded forests with lower diversity and ecological benefits. Once in this altered state\, forests need human influences to return to their historic level of productivity. Forestry practices\, such as prescribed burning and timber thinning\, can greatly improve overall forest health and generate income through timber sales and cost-share programs. \nOur guest speaker\, Michael Mitchell\, is an Arkansas Registered Forester with Devereux & Associates LLC. Mr. Mitchell has decades of experience working with landowners and forest management in NW Arkansas. He will be leading a forest walk and talk where participants can ask questions and see real world examples of when and where forestry practices are needed\, or not\, and the logistics of getting practices implemented. Participants will also learn about the Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP) program – a dedicated funding program for producers and forest landowners in the War Eagle watershed. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Watershed History Night
DESCRIPTION:Join the Alliance and local historians to learn about generations of appreciating local rivers and lakes to celebrate Lakes Appreciation Month! \n  \nJoin the Beaver Watershed Alliance (Alliance) to celebrate Lakes Appreciation Month! On Thursday\, July 25th\, beginning at 6 pm\, special guest speakers will share some of the fascinating history of the Beaver Lake watershed including its lakes\, rivers\, and early settlers who utilized these natural resources. The free event will be held at the Elkins Community Center (162 Doolin Drive\, Elkins\, AR) and snacks and refreshments will be provided. \nLocal historian\, Susan Young\, will share a story on “Kith\, Kin\, and Claims on Chicken Bristle Mountain.” Susan is a lifelong resident of Fayetteville and a fifth-generation Ozarker. She worked as the outreach coordinator for the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History in Springdale for 27 years. Susan’s presentation will follow the life story of a woman who came to the present-day Elkins area before the Civil War\, outlived two husbands\, and raised her many children in the area. The White River of the Elkins area drew many settlers (from the first humans to today) to the area\, including the woman in the topic of the presentation. Everyone has a story to tell- come learn about how local rivers in the area impacted the lives of early settlers! \nAlan Bland\, retired Beaver Lake Army Corps of Engineers Ranger\, worked on the lake for decades. Bland will present more present-day histories of how Beaver Lake came to be\, the intricacies of building the lake (or reservoir as this presentation will teach you!)\, and the benefits it continues to provide us every day. \nIn addition\, a display of the History of Beaver Lake\, commissioned by Beaver Water District\, will be available for viewing throughout the month of July at the Elkins Community Center. \nThis event is free to attend and all ages are welcome. Lakes Appreciation Month is an annual campaign in July\, with partners across Arkansas working together to raise awareness of the value and importance of our local lakes and reminds us all where we would be without them. \n

SUMMARY:Arkansas Water Webinar #5
DESCRIPTION:Join the Alliance and partners for a free Arkansas Water Webinar. The fifth topic will cover Mussel Ecology in Arkansas & War Eagle Dam Removals with guest speakers Kendall Moles (Ph.D.\, Malacologist) and Sean Saunders (North Central Arkansas Stream Habitat Coordinator). Click HERE to register. \nWar Eagle Creek is the largest tributary to Beaver Lake\, drinking water source for 550\,000 residents in Northwest Arkansas. \nA collaborative partnership between Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC)\, Beaver Watershed Alliance\, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service\, landowners\, nonprofits\, state and local governments\, and others are working together to improve War Eagle Creek and its tributaries. \nThrough mutual goals and collaboration\, over $3.6 million in funding has been obtained to move forward with the project. Partners are actively working to remove stream barriers to open 434 miles of waterway\, address eroding streambanks\, restore riparian and wetlands\, propagate mussels for reestablishment and conduct biological monitoring. In less than a year\, a large dam and overflow barrier were removed on War Eagle Creek (Fall 2023). \nThese efforts aim to improve water quality and protect our drinking water supply\, but will also restore habitat for target species\, as twenty-seven Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN) occur in War Eagle Creek\, including two federally protected species. These projects will also help to aid local counties in flood management\, restore floodplains\, help local farmers\, and provide education throughout the watershed area. \nAGFC Stream Habitat Coordinator Sean Saunders will join us to speak about the restoration details of the project\, as well as the benefits of barrier removals and stream restoration. AGFC Malacologist\, Dr. Kendall Moles\, will also join us to discuss the ecology of mussels and the work done at the War Eagle restoration sites to collect over 2\,000 mussels. \n  \nWhen: Wednesday\, August 21\, 2024\, Noon – 1:00 PM \n  \nClick HERE to register \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.

SUMMARY:2024 Friendraiser
DESCRIPTION:Save the date! The annual Alliance Friendraiser will be held on Thursday\, September 19th from 6:00 – 8:30 pm at Bunch Park in Elkins\, AR. Join us for a night of celebrating source water protection through music\, food\, education\, a silent auction\, and more! Purchase tickets below. \nThe Alliance hosts an annual Friendraiser to celebrate another year of successful watershed protection. The relationships and partnerships among agencies\, organizations\, landowners\, and other perspectives help put funding on the ground to restore\, protect\, and enhance the Beaver Lake watershed. Beaver Lake supplies drinking water to 1 in 5 Arkansans\, provides industries with the water needed to produce products and services\, and contributes over $101 million in visitor spending to the regional economy of Northwest Arkansas. Managing the watershed area\, or lands that drain into Beaver Lake\, including portions of Benton\, Carroll\, Washington\, and Madison counties\, takes a lot of collaboration and resources.
