Lakes Appreciation Month is an annual campaign in July\, with partners across Arkansas working together to raise awareness of the value and importance of our local lakes and reminds us all where we would be without them. Northwest Arkansas is fortunate to have Beaver Lake\, which supplies drinking water to 1 in 5 Arkansans. \nTo bring awareness to this\, the Beaver Watershed Alliance is partnering with Beaver Water District and our local libraries to celebrate throughout July. On August 11th\, we will be at the West Fork Public Library for a storytime and activity from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM. SUMMARY:Beaver Lake Volunteer Day
DESCRIPTION:Join the litter cleanup around Beaver Lake! Hosted every year by H2Ozarks\, Beaver Water District\, and the US Army Corps of Engineers\, this event strives to protect Beaver Lake\, our drinking water source in Northwest Arkansas. Over 600\,000 people get their drinking water from Beaver Lake\, and it’s vital that we keep this beloved natural resource beautiful and clean. There will be multiple locations to volunteer at. Volunteers can help clean up along the shoreline or by boat (BYO boat)! Clean-up supplies\, snacks\, and t-shirts are provided for all volunteers. \nAfterwards\, join us at the Hickory Creek Marina to celebrate! There will be lunch for all volunteers\, as well as raffle prizes\, a science fair with partner booths\, and opportunities to learn more about Beaver Lake! Click HERE for more information. \nHow to Volunteer:\n\nRegister your team. Grab your friends\, family or coworkers! The designated team leader will register once for their entire team. Team leaders will guide volunteers at their chosen cleanup site in the morning\, where they will help pick up litter from the shorelines to protect the beauty and water quality of Beaver Lake. Register HERE.\nPick your cleanup spot. When you register\, you will be asked where you want to volunteer. There are multiple check-in stations listed below with links to Google Maps. If you’re not sure where to go\, we can help you! Send us an email and we’d be happy to suggest our most needed locations.\nGet your supplies. Trash bags\, gloves\, snacks\, and other supplies will be provided for all volunteers. You can pick supplies up the morning of the event at your site’s check-in station. Partners are working together to grow high quality potted trees from bare root seedlings. These ‘communitrees’ are then donated to reforestation projects around the state focused on stream and lake side corridors or “forested riparian buffers” in watersheds that provide drinking water to Arkansans. Three of the state’s largest water utilities are partnering to provide “grow sites” for seedlings to be used to buffer the sources of water we use for drinking. Learn how this helps utilities meet their source water protection goals and what exciting projects these trees are contributing to around the state.
