DESCRIPTION:The Beaver Watershed Alliance is joining the City of Fayetteville to assist with a cleanup of Lake Sequoyah! SUMMARY:West Fork White River Cleanup (Pick Up Where You Play Event)
DESCRIPTION:Where: Check-in at Walker Park in Fayetteville (Main pavilion off of S. College Ave.). Multiple cleanup locations will range from trail\, land\, and in-stream across south Fayetteville. \nDetails: The Beaver Watershed Alliance will host the West Fork – White River Cleanup on Saturday\, October 8th\, in partnership with multiple community partners. Volunteers will help remove litter and bulky waste in the West Fork watershed\, a sub-watershed of Beaver Lake (the source of NWA’s drinking water!). Donuts and coffee will be provided at check-in courtesy of Beaver Water District. Volunteers will sign in and gather cleanup supplies at Walker Park at 9 am and follow a site leader to a designated cleanup site. Return to Walker Park for litter and recycling drop-off and participate in a fun raffle! Those wishing to participate in the float must provide their own canoe or kayak and RSVP in advance. \nWhat is provided: Gloves\, tools\, water\, snacks\, and cleanup supplies will be provided at check-in. Donuts and coffee will be provided at check-in courtesy of Beaver Water District. \nWhat to bring/wear: Dress in clothes you don’t mind getting dirty! DESCRIPTION:Join Us for Private Lands Partners Day 2022\nThe Illinois River watershed has over 1\,000 miles of streams and covers over 1 million acres in the Ozark Highlands region of western Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma. Karst features\, such as sinkholes\, spring-fed streams\, and caves\, are common across the region. The historical ecology included hardwood and pine forests\, savannas\, and tall grass prairies. \nToday\, most of the land use consists of agriculture and expanding urban/ residential areas. Poultry and cattle are the primary agricultural land uses; pastureland and hay fields being common. This region\, like many across Missouri\, Arkansas\, Oklahoma\, Kansas\, and the region depend on partnerships that improve water quality\, wildlife habitat\, and the productivity of private lands. \nFayetteville\, the site of the Private Lands Partners Day 2022\, lies in the heart of a region with double-digit annual population growth\, one of the fastest in the Southeastern United States\, as well as extensive public and private lands used for hunting\, fishing\, recreation\, and agriculture. This tremendous urban growth puts enormous pressure on natural resources\, water quality\, agriculture\, and the rural character and way of life of this region. Partners here have worked together with landowners for many years to identify\, protect\, and improve lands of high value from an ecological\, agricultural\, and historical perspective. (this event is family-friendly). \nEach year\, the Alliance hosts an annual Friendraiser to celebrate another year of successful watershed protection. It is the relationships and partnerships among agencies\, organizations\, landowners\, and other perspectives that help put funding on the ground to restore\, protect and enhance the Beaver Lake watershed. We want to celebrate YOU and your efforts that make NWA a great place to live\, farm\, work\, and play. Beaver Lake supplies drinking water to 1 in 6 Arkansans\, provides industries with the water needed to produce products and services and contributes over $101 million in visitor spending to the regional economy of Northwest Arkansas. Managing the watershed area\, or lands that drain into Beaver Lake\, including portions of Benton\, Carroll\, Washington\, and Madison counties\, takes a lot of collaboration and resources. DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Shelly Smith\, H2Ozarks Program Manager \nPlease join us for a free online workshop hosted by the Alliance on Zoom to learn about septic program efforts in Northwest Arkansas. Septic systems treat residential wastewater and are most common in rural areas where access to centralized sewer systems is limited. While septic systems are generally minimally disruptive to the environment\, systems that are inadequate or improperly maintained can become ineffective and lead to failures that pose risks to both public and environmental health. \nH2Ozarks Septic Remediation Program aims to repair or replace failing septic systems and prevent potential pollutants from entering the groundwater and nearby surface waters. With funding from the Arkansas Natural Resource Division\, H2Ozarks is able to help homeowners residing in the Beaver Reservoir Watershed with the cost of septic system replacement with a combination of grant and zero-interest loan funds. Important waterbodies in the Beaver Reservoir include Beaver Lake\, the White River\, and the Kings River\, and the watershed covers parts of Benton\, Washington\, Madison\, Carroll\, Boone\, Franklin\, and Newton Counties. Additionally\, a Septic Remediation Program will be available in the Buffalo River Watershed beginning September 1. \nIn this presentation\, we will discuss septic failures – what they can look like\, and ways we can correct them. We will discuss types of failures we have seen with projects and how our financial assistance program works. We will also cover the importance of proper septic maintenance and will have time for Q&A. With over a half-million acres of reservoirs in Arkansas\, summer is a great time to encourage all Arkansans to appreciate the lakes of our Natural State by participating in recreation and stewardship activities. All life needs water\, let’s not take it for granted! \n  \nJoin the Alliance for a fun evening at Lake Wilson to celebrate this hidden gem of a lake! In partnership with Pack Rat Outdoor Center and the City of Fayetteville\, we will be hosting an on-the-water cleanup (bring your own boat\, canoe\, or kayak) to remove litter and fishing line\, as well as a native plant walk around the shores of the lake. DESCRIPTION:The Beaver Watershed Alliance is set to hold an in-person Riparian Workshop and Volunteer Planting Event on Saturday\, March 19th. The Riparian Workshop will be held at the Clifty Fire Department from 10:00 am until 11:45 am. Free lunch will be provided for workshop attendees. A hands-on planting event will be held after lunch at a nearby stream restoration site. The planting will begin at 12:00 noon and last until 2:30 pm. This event is free\, and family friendly. \nThe morning session will feature speakers Sean Saunders with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission Stream Team\, and the Alliance’s Forest and Stream Resource Specialist\, Daniel Hagood. Participants will learn about stream stabilization techniques and how to establish and increase the health of their vegetation along streams and rivers to prevent land loss and slow down erosion. After lunch (provided by the Alliance) Shonda Garrison with Moonlit Heights Native Plants\, and Josh Duzan with Natural State Streams will present on the recent Clifty Creek stabilization project\, on-site. Participants will then have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in planting native trees\, shrubs and grasses in riparian areas along the creek. Tools and instructional training will be provided. \n“This will be a great opportunity for landowners neighboring streams or rivers to learn how to protect their land and make a positive impact on the water quality of the area\,” says Daniel Hagood\, Alliance Stream and Forest Resource Specialist. \nThis workshop and project installation is part of a grant awarded by the Reservoir Fisheries Habitat Partnership\, in partnership with Arkansas Game and Fish Commission\, to stabilize Clifty Creek and reduce sediment loads to Beaver Lake\, improve shoreline habitat and fish habitat in Beaver Lake. Our awesome Watershed Steward Intern\, Abby\, is assisting the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s Stream Team and other volunteers in planting almost 150 native trees along London Creek in Brentwood for stream bank improvement and to prevent erosion.  \nEven though Brentwood is almost an hour’s drive from Beaver Lake\, sediment from erosion in this area can travel all the way from these tributaries into the White River\, and then Beaver Lake. We invite you to attend the Alliance Quarterly Speaker Series\, Thursday\, February 17\, at 12 noon – 1 pm by zoom to learn more about this initiative & kick-off 2022 with opportunities for your comments and input. A panel of guest speakers including Dr. Sarah E. Lewis\, University of Arkansas – Arkansas Water Resources Center staff including Dr. Brian Haggard and Erin Grantz\, & Alliance Executive Director\, Becky Roark will present the draft metrics & answer questions \n“This will be a great opportunity for the community to provide input & feedback for how we measure success in water quality efforts & better assist a growing region\,” states Roark. “We are thrilled to have local expertise to assist with this project\, & need landowners\, water quality professionals\, conservation groups\, businesses\, industry folks\, higher education professionals & government staff to participate in this important next step.” \nIdentifying key metrics of success for the Beaver Lake Watershed Protection Strategy will not only help to achieve and support an adaptive management approach in watershed activities but will also provide a framework for other groups looking to achieve similar goals. In addition\, watershed success metrics can help bring together science with decision-making\, to advance a watershed-based management approach.\nA series of public meetings will be held to gain local stakeholder feedback & perspectives throughout the process. This Speaker Series will serve as the kickoff for public comments.
