SUMMARY:War Eagle Movie Night
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free family-friendly movie night to watch two local conservation films on Friday\, June 5th from 6 – 7 p.m. at the Basham Community Center in Downtown Huntsville! The Alliance\, Northwest Arkansas Land Trust\, and community partners will be showing free film screenings of “Bridge to War Eagle” and “One Acre at a Time” to kick off the annual War Eagle Appreciation Day festivities! Free snacks will be provided. Both films celebrate War Eagle Creek and the people and conservation organizations that support a healthy watershed! \n.                     \nBridge to War Eagle:\nThe old steel bridge and iconic grist mill on War Eagle Creek in the Ozark hills frame a collection of poignant stories in a new documentary film by the Emmy Award winning team of Larry Foley and Dale Carpenter. Bridge to War Eagle is a 30-minute film about a wild stream\, protected only by the folks who use it\, and illustrated by the stories of those who love it. The narrator is country music star Joe Nichols of Rogers\, Arkansas\, who’s been coming to the War Eagle his entire life. \nThis program is made possible by a grant from the Audubon Arkansas\, through the William Rufus Stephens Junior Memorial Fund\, Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism\, Arkansas Game and Fish Commission\, Beaver Water District\, and Jim Lindsey-The Lindsey Company. \nOne Acre at a Time:\nThis short film made in collaboration with SUDO Studios\, offers an inside look at Northwest Arkansas Land Trust (NWALT)’s work to protect land and water across Northwest Arkansas. The film follows NWALT staff as they work alongside landowners\, community partners\, and the landscapes they steward- providing a deeper look at who we are\, why this work matters\, and how conservation happens on the ground.

SUMMARY:June Arkansas Water Webinar
DESCRIPTION:What happens when a drinking water reservoir serving more than 80\,000 people starts experiencing occasional harmful algal blooms and water quality problems? Find out at the next Arkansas Water Webinar\, hosted by the Arkansas Water Resources Center on Thursday\, June 18\, from noon to 1 p.m. \nBrewer Lake is a mesotrophic drinking water reservoir serving >80\,000 people in Central Arkansas. In recent years\, this reservoir has exhibited occasional harmful algal blooms and seasonal nuisance taste-odor issues. Toward an ecological diagnosis of the cause\, we have monitored water quality year-round at Brewer Lake since 2019\, focusing on lake physico-chemistry\, nutrient dynamics\, and taste-odor compounds. Complementary research by our group has characterized watershed loading and lake-bottom sediment storage and release of nutrients into lake surface waters. In this presentation\, I will describe how the seasonal and annual pulse of Brewer Lake reflects lake mixing and stratification\, coupled to changes in lake nutrient dynamics. I will link our research insights to outcomes including improved drinking water treatment and development of a watershed management plan for Brewer Lake. Our work demonstrates how scientists’ collaboration with a water utility can advance source water protection in the long-term. \nSpeaker: Hal Halvorson\, PhD\, Associate Professor\, Department of Biology\, University of Central Arkansas\, hhalvorson@uca.edu \nDr. Halvorson is an Associate Professor in the Biology Department at the University of Central Arkansas. He and his lab group study the ecological of freshwater ecosystems\, with particular focus on the inter-relations among water quality\, microbes\, and invertebrates. He earned his B.A. in Biology and Chemistry from St. Olaf College in Minnesota and Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Arkansas. He has studied Brewer Lake for >6 years with particular focus on water quality and nutrient cycling. He lives in Little Rock with his husband\, Nathan. \nRegister here!\n
