SUMMARY:Alliance Quarterly Speaker Series - Septic Program Efforts in NWA
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Shelly Smith\, H2Ozarks Program Manager \nPlease join us for a free online workshop hosted by the Alliance on Zoom to learn about septic program efforts in Northwest Arkansas. Septic systems treat residential wastewater and are most common in rural areas where access to centralized sewer systems is limited. While septic systems are generally minimally disruptive to the environment\, systems that are inadequate or improperly maintained can become ineffective and lead to failures that pose risks to both public and environmental health. \nH2Ozarks Septic Remediation Program aims to repair or replace failing septic systems and prevent potential pollutants from entering the groundwater and nearby surface waters. With funding from the Arkansas Natural Resource Division\, H2Ozarks is able to help homeowners residing in the Beaver Reservoir Watershed with the cost of septic system replacement with a combination of grant and zero-interest loan funds. Important waterbodies in the Beaver Reservoir include Beaver Lake\, the White River\, and the Kings River\, and the watershed covers parts of Benton\, Washington\, Madison\, Carroll\, Boone\, Franklin\, and Newton Counties. Additionally\, a Septic Remediation Program will be available in the Buffalo River Watershed beginning September 1. \nIn this presentation\, we will discuss septic failures – what they can look like\, and ways we can correct them. We will discuss types of failures we have seen with projects and how our financial assistance program works. We will also cover the importance of proper septic maintenance and will have time for Q&A. Landowners and/or septic owners are encouraged to attend! \nCLICK HERE to register \nThis event is sponsored by H2Ozarks and Beaver Water District. \nFor questions\, please email info@beaverwatershedalliance.org or call 479-750-8007.

SUMMARY:NWA Stormwater Discussion 2022 with Field Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join the Beaver Watershed Alliance and Illinois River Watershed Partnership (IRWP) for a regional stormwater discussion! \nAdvance your expertise and contribute to the NWA Stormwater Discussion with professionals from planning\, development\, engineering\, and our locally elected officials. \nClick Here to Register \nThe goal of this learning opportunity is to advance the conversation on policy and planning by gaining multiple perspectives on ways we can integrate sustainable stormwater practices and supporting policies. Secondarily\, we hope to arm our cities\, counties\, and developers with tools and ideas on how we can work together to tackle stormwater management challenges across the region– challenges that will grow as the population and need for developed spaces expands and creates a greater risk for incidents of flooding and erosion. We will also discuss financing ideas as well as opportunities available to help fund low-impact development or green infrastructure projects. \nThe event will include speakers from the City of Hot Springs on their 15 years of implementation of their stormwater utility\, the Urban Land Institute (ULI) on smart development opportunities\, and more. The workshop will build off of ideas at the NWA LID Conference and work that our partners at the Beaver Watershed Alliance (BWA) are doing. We will get outdoors to take a closer look at stormwater management solutions being implemented by developers and the City of Rogers. We want to foster plenty of open discussion across these professional disciplines to surface further discussion and understand the real barriers to implementation of both policy and practice. \nDevelopers\, real estate professionals\, city and county elected officials\, those in planning\, engineering\, and related disciplines are invited to attend\, others are welcome also. Please note: We will cap the discussion at 75 participants and will prioritize seats for those in the professional fields mentioned above. \nClick Here to Register \n  \n

TNC will discuss the benefits to water quality\, conservation\, and infrastructure that barrier remediation can provide using three different projects of varying size and scope as examples. Project management considerations and lessons learned from each project will also be presented. \nRegistration is required. This speaker series will be free and held on Zoom. A live Q & A will follow the presentation. The presentation will be recorded and uploaded on Alliance YouTube. \nClick here to register. SUMMARY:London Creek Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:What a great start to 2022! Our awesome Watershed Steward Intern\, Abby\, is assisting the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s Stream Team and other volunteers in planting almost 150 native trees along London Creek in Brentwood for stream bank improvement and to prevent erosion. \nEven though Brentwood is almost an hour’s drive from Beaver Lake\, sediment from erosion in this area can travel all the way from these tributaries into the White River\, and then Beaver Lake. Projects like this can play a big role in keeping soil in place in these streambanks. (Photos courtesy of NWA Democrat-Gazette/Andy Shupe)

SUMMARY:Alliance Quarterly Speaker Series- “Beaver Lake Watershed Success Metrics”
DESCRIPTION:In tandem with the Beaver Lake Watershed Protection Strategy updates\, the Alliance has commissioned a study to develop metrics for watershed management success. We invite you to attend the Alliance Quarterly Speaker Series\, Thursday\, February 17\, at 12 noon – 1 pm by zoom to learn more about this initiative & kick-off 2022 with opportunities for your comments and input. A panel of guest speakers including Dr. Sarah E. Lewis\, University of Arkansas – Arkansas Water Resources Center staff including Dr. Brian Haggard and Erin Grantz\, & Alliance Executive Director\, Becky Roark will present the draft metrics & answer questions \n“This will be a great opportunity for the community to provide input & feedback for how we measure success in water quality efforts & better assist a growing region\,” states Roark. “We are thrilled to have local expertise to assist with this project\, & need landowners\, water quality professionals\, conservation groups\, businesses\, industry folks\, higher education professionals & government staff to participate in this important next step.” \nIdentifying key metrics of success for the Beaver Lake Watershed Protection Strategy will not only help to achieve and support an adaptive management approach in watershed activities but will also provide a framework for other groups looking to achieve similar goals. In addition\, watershed success metrics can help bring together science with decision-making\, to advance a watershed-based management approach.\nA series of public meetings will be held to gain local stakeholder feedback & perspectives throughout the process. This Speaker Series will serve as the kickoff for public comments. Funding for this initiative has been generously provided by the Walton Family Foundation\, and the project is set to conclude by June 2022.This event is sponsored by the Walton Family Foundation & Beaver Water District. \nContact the Alliance at 479-750-8007 or info@beaverwatershedalliance.org for questions about the workshop
