SUMMARY:AR Water Webinar
DESCRIPTION:TOPIC: AGFC Considering Fish and People at River Access Developments: Improved Conservation-based Recreation and Habitat with Infrastructure Development Projects \nAGFC has a history of minimalist provision at river access areas based on historic funding provided primarily by anglers. This resulted in a mindset of primarily just providing for parking and boat access. Funding and recreational use at river access sites have diversified\, as well as types of angling. Also\, stream habitat engineering\, streambank access stability design and engineering have advanced. AGFC is trying to incorporate improved water quality\, stream fisheries habitat\, streambank stabilization\, improved riverside access\, and bank fishing at river access sites. As important\, access area design now strives toward decreased long-term maintenance expenses by incorporating more built-in sustainability such as no-mow areas providing pollinator habitat and solar-powered safety lighting. \nSPEAKER: Darrell Bowman\, Recreation and Access Coordinator\, Arkansas Game and Fish Commission \nWHEN: Nov 5\, 2024 12:00 PM CST \nREGISTER: Click here to register \n

SUMMARY:Arkansas Water Webinar #2
DESCRIPTION:Join the Alliance and partners for a free Arkansas Water Webinar. This will be an ongoing series leading up to the Annual Water Conference in July. The second topic will be “Septic Remediation Pilot Programs in Priority Watersheds” with speakers Morgan Keeling\, Shelly Smith\, Erin Scott\, and Stefanie Reynolds. \nSeptic systems are a potential source of impairment for groundwater and surface-flowing waterways. Most homeowners do not have sufficient savings to fully address outages when they are needed. In an effort to reduce the environmental and health impacts caused by failing systems\, Illinois River Watershed Partnership (IRWP) and H2Ozarks have piloted Septic Tank Remediation Programs to offer financial assistance (grants and 0% interest loans) and technical assistance to homeowners\, funded by the Arkansas Department of Agriculture – Natural Resources Division (NRD). Learn how this program is administered and how this program uses Clean Water State Revolving Funds (CWSRF) to fund operations\, outreach\, design\, and construction of projects that meet eligibility criteria.  \nWhen: Wednesday\, April 24\, 2024\, Noon – 1:00 PM \nClick HERE to register. \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. \n  \nThis event is in partnership with the following: \n\nArkansas Water Resources Center\nBeaver Watershed Alliance\nAR Forest and Drinking Water Collaborative\nAR Dept of Ag – Forestry Division\nAR Dept of Ag – Natural Resources Division\nIRWP\nH2Ozarks

SUMMARY:Alliance Quarterly Speaker Series - Septic Program Efforts in NWA
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Shelly Smith\, H2Ozarks Program Manager \nPlease join us for a free online workshop hosted by the Alliance on Zoom to learn about septic program efforts in Northwest Arkansas. Septic systems treat residential wastewater and are most common in rural areas where access to centralized sewer systems is limited. While septic systems are generally minimally disruptive to the environment\, systems that are inadequate or improperly maintained can become ineffective and lead to failures that pose risks to both public and environmental health. \nH2Ozarks Septic Remediation Program aims to repair or replace failing septic systems and prevent potential pollutants from entering the groundwater and nearby surface waters. With funding from the Arkansas Natural Resource Division\, H2Ozarks is able to help homeowners residing in the Beaver Reservoir Watershed with the cost of septic system replacement with a combination of grant and zero-interest loan funds. Important waterbodies in the Beaver Reservoir include Beaver Lake\, the White River\, and the Kings River\, and the watershed covers parts of Benton\, Washington\, Madison\, Carroll\, Boone\, Franklin\, and Newton Counties. Additionally\, a Septic Remediation Program will be available in the Buffalo River Watershed beginning September 1. \nIn this presentation\, we will discuss septic failures – what they can look like\, and ways we can correct them. We will discuss types of failures we have seen with projects and how our financial assistance program works. We will also cover the importance of proper septic maintenance and will have time for Q&A. Landowners and/or septic owners are encouraged to attend! \nCLICK HERE to register \nThis event is sponsored by H2Ozarks and Beaver Water District. \nFor questions\, please email info@beaverwatershedalliance.org or call 479-750-8007.

SUMMARY:Speaker Series: Unpaved Roads- Efforts in Arkansas
DESCRIPTION:Join the Alliance for our Quarterly Speaker Series! Kevin McGaughey with Arkansas Natural Resources Division (ANRD)\, and Clay Word with The Nature Conservancy (TNC) will be presenting on “Unpaved Roads – Efforts in Arkansas” \n85% of Arkansas roads are unpaved and can contribute significant amounts of sediment- the #1 pollutant in the Beaver Lake Watershed\, into our waterways. Learn from an Arkansas Natural Resources Division specialist about how the Arkansas Unpaved Roads Grant Program (AURP) functions\, helps counties in practical ways economically and can help improve water quality. \nA specialist from TNC will also present on the importance of stream barrier remediation in the Interior Highlands. TNC will discuss the benefits to water quality\, conservation\, and infrastructure that barrier remediation can provide using three different projects of varying size and scope as examples. Project management considerations and lessons learned from each project will also be presented. \nRegistration is required. This speaker series will be free and held on Zoom. A live Q & A will follow the presentation. The presentation will be recorded and uploaded on Alliance YouTube. \nClick here to register. For any questions\, please email info@beaverwatershedalliance.org \nClick here to download the flyer. \nThis Speaker Series is sponsored by Beaver Water District. \n

SUMMARY:SPEAKER SERIES: Investing in Water Supply Protection in NWA
DESCRIPTION:Theo Witsell\, Ecologist and Chief of Research for the Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission\, joined us last week for our final Speaker Series of 2021 and gave a phenomenal talk on the natural history and ecology of the Northwest Arkansas Ozarks. Click the link in our bio to watch the recording on our YouTube! Theo spoke on the amazing flora and fauna found in Arkansas\, as well as the now disappearing habitats and landscapes which support them. \nIf you’re a landowner in the Beaver Lake Watershed and interested in land management practices like the prairie and woodland restorations shown in the video\, the Alliance can help! The health of our natural infrastructures like forests and prairies directly affects the quality of water in the area too. Email us at info@beaverwatershedalliance.org for more information.
