TOPIC: AGFC Considering Fish and People at River Access Developments: Improved Conservation-based Recreation and Habitat with Infrastructure Development Projects
AGFC has a history of minimalist provision at river access areas based on historic funding provided primarily by anglers. This resulted in a mindset of primarily just providing for parking and boat access. Funding and recreational use at river access sites have diversified, as well as types of angling. Also, stream habitat engineering, streambank access stability design and engineering have advanced. AGFC is trying to incorporate improved water quality, stream fisheries habitat, streambank stabilization, improved riverside access, and bank fishing at river access sites. As important, access area design now strives toward decreased long-term maintenance expenses by incorporating more built-in sustainability such as no-mow areas providing pollinator habitat and solar-powered safety lighting.
